Breaking Boundaries: World Record for Longest Indoor Freefall

"Breaking Boundaries: World Record for Longest Indoor Freefall"
At Airflyer Academy, we know that the sky isn’t the only place where skydivers push their limits. Some of the most mind-blowing feats of freefall happen indoors, in the controlled yet exhilarating environment of wind tunnels. On July 10, 2018, two Russian adventurers, Viktor Kozlov and Sergey Dmitriyev, proved just that by smashing the Guinness World Record for the longest indoor freefall in history!
A Record-Breaking Feat
Viktor and Sergey spent an unbelievable 8 hours, 33 minutes, and 43 seconds in continuous flight inside the innovative FreeFly Technology wind tunnel, Wind Zone, located in Perm, Russia. For context, each minute of body flight in a wind tunnel is equivalent to the freefall in a skydive, which means these two daredevils experienced the same as 513 skydives in a row! That’s like falling continuously for 1280 miles—roughly the distance from New York to Cuba. Pretty wild, right?
Their incredible achievement wasn’t just a matter of stamina; it required precise control and physical endurance to maintain such a prolonged freefall. And let’s not forget the mental toughness needed to stay focused during more than eight hours of non-stop flight. This wasn’t just about breaking records—it was about breaking boundaries.
Wind Tunnels: A Place for Adventure
Wind tunnels, like the one used in Wind Zone, offer the perfect setting for skydivers to hone their skills, train, or even attempt to set world records, as Viktor and Sergey did. Here at Airflyer Academy, we know firsthand how powerful wind tunnel training can be. It provides an immersive, controlled environment that mimics freefall but without the stress of real altitude. And just like Viktor and Sergey, our students use tunnels to master everything from basic body control to advanced free-flying techniques. But don’t worry, we won’t ask you to fly for 8 hours straight on your first day!
The Skydiving Community Pushes Limits
This record wasn't just about the individuals; it was a moment of pride for the entire global skydiving community. Wind tunnels around the world, including top-tier facilities have become essential in modern skydiving training, allowing jumpers of all skill levels to push their boundaries. From Spain to the UAE, previous record holders Stef Millet, Manu Sarazin, Matt Munting, and Hind Salih had already set impressive benchmarks, but Viktor and Sergey took things to a whole new level.
With wind tunnel technology continuously improving, it makes us wonder—what’s next? Could we see 10 hours of indoor flight? 12? Whatever the future holds, one thing is certain: wind tunnels have revolutionized the sport of skydiving, opening up new opportunities for training, competition, and, of course, world records!
